Welcome to the Cumbria Autism Support site!

Cumbria Autism Support was created to offer support to adults with Autism as well as their families and carers. Whilst we are based in Carlisle, Cumbria anyone is welcome to contact us and attend our meetings.

As we are sure you are already aware if you have been diagnosed with Autism or if you are a family member of someone with Autism, there is literally no support available to adults on the Spectrum. Through this site we hope to at least be able to offer some support as well as be an information / signposting resource. We also wish to offer our members a place to meet and socialise and discuss common issues.

Shocking News of interaction between the Governments fit for work tests and an Autism Sufferer

This is why it is so important for support groups to exist and for members to attend because the services are otherwise completely unaccountable when things like this happens. Services like ATOS have little to no understanding of autism and how this impacts on a persons ability to work and if no one stands up for people this is what happens

Suspending further meetings

The meeting with healthwatch UK was very interesting and alot of information was given out to us, Unfortunately only 2 people actually turned up for the meeting which was very disheartening.

Cumbria Autism Support was created with the main aims of offering a safe place for members to meet and support each other, to provide support to our members and to be a voice to encourage the development of services for adults with autism.

Today, we had a meeting and had organised a guest speaker who is instrumental to developing such services but unfortunately due to the lack of attendance we were unable to demonstrate the need for such services. We are deeply disappointed about this because we know how desperately our members need these services but we cannot achieve our objectives without the consistent support and attendance of our members.

This is particularly disappointing because if there is no push or demand for change nothing will change and adults on the spectrum and their carers will continue to have no support.

Before organising the meeting we asked our members if they could attend and despite many members confirming attendance only two members actually came to the meeting.

We have, therefore, made the decision to suspend any further meetings. Its pointless if the people arn't going to put the input and effort to actually attend!

Our members can still contact us via Facebook or through this website if you wish

Great meeting and great turn out!

Thanks to Gareth Presch our guest speaker and to everyone who attended our last meeting! I think it was an overwhelming success and some great points were made about the subject of autism and how we can support each other in our community.

Back and planning the next meeting

News Update We are now in the final stages of securing a room for our meetings at the University and I hope this will be approved shortly in time to arrange a meeting for the end of March beginning of April and hopefully thereafter we will be automatically allocated the room monthly.

We have also asked the University to consider letting us have a room for a carers coffee morning monthly and are waiting for confirmation that we can have this. We have also now decided to register Cumbria Autism Support as a charity as this will give us access to small amounts of funding that will enable us to expand the support given to our members and arrange more events etc.

We will discuss this in our next meeting. We will need a Secretary for the group, anyone interested in this role please let me know. We have also been in contact with a graphics designer to design a new logo specifically for our group and hope to have this very soon ... watch this space.
